The Byzantine & Christian Museum presents the temporary photographic exhibition of the renowned artist photographer Vassilis Artikos, entitled: “… “in drum and dance” in the carved churches of Lalibela”.

Through the photographic lens of Vassilis Artikou, visitors to the museum will have the opportunity to travel to Christian Ethiopia, and in particular to the northern highlands of the country where the small town of Lalibela is located, home to a unique monumental set of eleven monolithic churches, carved into the volcanic rock and dating from the 9th to the 14th century. These impressive churches, considered the eighth wonder of the world, have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and continue to serve the worship needs of the Ethiopian Christian community to this day.

In the 65 photographs presented in the exhibition, the photographer captures the beauty of this unique site, which he has visited repeatedly, while observing the pilgrims who flock to Lalibela by the thousands on the occasion of the great Christian festivals. The faithful, wearing white robes and carrying sticks to facilitate their difficult journey to the holy pilgrimage, gather at dawn in the carved churches to take part in the sacramental service, where elders and deacons chant and dance slowly to the sound of drums and seers.

The photographic exhibition is enriched by a small collection of recent works from the Byzantine & Christian Museum, which are connected to the monophysite community of Ethiopia.
