The poetics of space
Group exhibition by Braggart Gallery at Pappa’s Mill
The Braggart contemporary art gallery in collaboration with the Vice Mayor Office of Culture & Sciences of the Municipality of Larissa, organizes on the ground floor of the Pappas Mill (main building), a group exhibition of its collaborators entitled “The Poetics of Space” from 29 March2 to 9 April 2022. The opening will take place on Tuesday 29 March at 20:00.
The experience of the pandemic and forced confinement has strengthened our emotional relationship with our domestic environment, with our inner space. On the basis of this new psychology of “home” that has been created, our inner space is now seen as an extension of ourselves. The exhibition “The Poetics of Space” takes its title from the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard‘s book, “The Poetics of Space”, first published in 1957, in which Bachelard argues for the transfer of the poet’s emotionality into the surrounding space and objects, a process that endows all matter with a poetic essence and extends the domestic space into a poetic space.
The interior space serves as an inspiration for visual commentary on the relationship between man and his everyday objects. After all, as Gaston Bachelard suggested, our map of our habitats, our objects and our routines with them, are inextricably linked to our experiences, to how we see the “inside” and the “outside”. This exhibition explores this philosophy surrounding space and place – this interaction – and how we perceive our immediate environment, and presents a series of contemporary visual artworks in a variety of media – paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, drawings – that explore and communicate some of the myriad ways in which artists have contemplated space, from its visual perceptions, to its emotional impact and, ultimately, its geographical or topographical boundaries. It also examines the way in which we experience, create and contain space, which for the participating visual artists is nothing less than the opening up of new regions of oxygen, a process of discovering new vital forces, a kind of creation of individual and collective energy.
