According to a decision of the Museums Council of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the former Greek Scarves Factory (BEM) in Metaxourgeio, Athens, will be transformed to a cultural centre with a permanent exhibition about printed clothing, an archive, administration offices, craft workshops, multipurpose spaces, café and shop. The building is 130 years old and was in operation until the 1990s. Restoration work has already begun, and the building will house the Museum of Fabric Printing and Scarf Production of BEM, aiming to preserve and highlight the material documents of this traditional art and craftsmanship from the late 19th to the early 20th century, and the Centre of Fabric Crafts, with an aim to preserve and highlight the intangible heritage (techniques, craftsmanship, patterns) of the traditional craft in relation to cultural entities of traditional arts, communities of crafters and contemporary artistic creation, contemporary industrial design and production and the creative economy (design, interior decoration, fashion).
