Archaeological Museum of Heraklion

The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is one of the oldest and most notable museums in Greece and one of the most important in Europe. Its exhibits include representative samples from all periods of Cretan prehistory and history, spanning approximately 5,500 years, from the Neolithic era to Roman times. However, the unique masterpieces of Minoan art, which can be admired throughout their entire evolution, hold a prominent place in its collections. The collection of Minoan antiquities is the most significant in the world, and the museum is rightly considered the preeminent museum of  Minoan civilization.

It is located in the city center and was built in three phases, from 1935 to 1958, based on designs by architect Patroklos Karantinos. During the Venetian occupation, the Catholic monastery of St. Francis stood on this very site; it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1856, and its ruins are visible today in the museum’s garden.

The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion (AMH), established under the provisions of Law 5021/2023 (Government Gazette 31/A/15.02.2023), is a legal entity under public law, operating under the supervision of the Minister of Culture. Its purpose is to operate as a museum within the framework of the Code of Legislation for the Protection of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage in General (Law 4858/2021, Government Gazette 220/A/19.11.2021) and public policy for the protection and promotion of the country’s cultural heritage.

The governing bodies of AMH are the seven-member Board of Directors (BoD) and the General Director.
