Description
The Master’s Program “Applied Bioinformatics and Data Analysis” is addressed to university graduates in biological sciences (Biology, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, Earth and Environmental Sciences) as well as to graduates in the wider field of Informatics, Mathematics, Polytechnic Schools. Particular emphasis is placed on the processing, analysis and interpretation of the data obtained with modern tools such as next-generation sequencing (NGS), as well as on the utilization of the most current technologies developed by IT science.
Graduates of the Program will be able to pursue a career in the emerging professional field of biological data analytics, where there is an increased need for interdisciplinarity, at academic and research institutions, biomedical and diagnostic centers, environmental laboratories and agencies as well as biotechnological and pharmaceutical companies. In addition, this program will be particularly useful to those who wish to follow an academic path through the preparation of a doctoral thesis, as it will help the graduates to develop their critical, analytical and synthetic skills, as well as the ability to write scientific texts.
The curriculum includes two semesters with ten courses in total (60 ECTS). The last course at the end of the second semester includes eight workshops for hands on practical training in biological data analysis. During the following summer period, the master’s thesis (15 ECTS) will be prepared. It is thus possible to complete the studies in one calendar year (75 ECTS in total). The lectures will be intensive and will take place on specific weekends (about 10) during the academic year. A part of the lectures (5 weekends) will be held at the facilities of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics in Alexandroupolis. The remaining lectures will be held over distant teaching and teleconference systems, provided by the university, according to the law being in force today.
The Master’s Program is implemented by the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, School of Health Sciences, Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), which has adequate and modern spaces, fully equipped laboratories for student exercises and modern equipment that allows the successful completion of the program and the achieving of its learning goals.
In the Master’s Program “Applied Bioinformatics and Data Analysis” is supported by professors from the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the Polytechnic School of DUTH, while scientists from universities or research centers in Greece and abroad are also invited.
Tuition fees for attending and completing the entire cycle of the Master’s Program amount to 2,500 euros.
