The scientific conference “Cyprus and the Cyprus problem: Institutional and cultural aspects, negotiation process, regional, technological and energy parameters, security and geostrategic dimensions”, which was jointly organized by the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and the Department of International and European Studies of the University of Piraeus has been successfully completed.

During the opening ceremony of the conference, the President of the Parliament Mrs. Anita Demetriou, the Rector of the University of Piraeus, Professor of Computer Science and Statistics in Business Administration Mr. Michael Sfakianakis and the Chairman of the Department of International and European Studies of the University of Piraeus, Professor of International Relations Mr. Aristotle Tziabiris addressed the conference.

In her address, which was broadcast on tape, due to her participation in the delegation that accompanied the President of the Republic to the Informal Expanded Meeting in Geneva on the Cyprus problem, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs.Anita Demetriou, pointed out that the detailed review of the historical course of the negotiations for the resolution of the Cyprus problem and the examination of the structural and substantive factors affecting their results constitutes an extremely topical issue. He also stressed that during the current critical period, the study and understanding of International Law, human rights and geopolitical developments is of paramount importance, noting that the broader geopolitical circumstances could accelerate a possible shift by Turkey towards a solution in the context of UN Security Council resolutions. Furthermore, the Speaker said that the status quo in Cyprus is unacceptable, as it breeds risks for the Republic of Cyprus, and that the perpetuation of the current deadlock will be disastrous for the Greek Cypriots.

During the main part of the conference, which consisted of four sections, it was highlighted through the contributions of Mr. Konstantinos Adamidis, Fotini Asderakis, Georgios Galanos, Evagoras L. Evagorou, Marios L. Evriviades, Christos Clerides, Aristotle Konstantinidis, Ilias Papagiannopoulos, Ioannis Paravantis, Nikolaos Raptopoulos, Dionysios Tsiriogotis and Irene Heila, as well as the Cypriot politicians Mr. Erato Kozakos Markoullis and Anna Koukkidis Prokopiou, a wide range of issues related to the complex aspects and parameters of the Cyprus problem, as well as the negotiation process, contributing to the dialogue and reflection that are developing especially during this period, during which efforts are being made to break the deadlock and resume the talks to resolve the Cyprus problem. In this context, the aspects of regional developments, energy, security, etc. were examined, inter alia.
