The presence of Greek students at the University of Padua is known from the 14th century, but the 17th century can be described as the era of the Greeks par excellence. At that time, the “Nazione oltramarina” was organized and obtained a Statute that defined its rules of operation. It also acquired its own Register, in which the pictorial emblems of the families to which its officers belonged were recorded. It resolved differences with the Alemannic nation (which caused the awe of the Greeks); it participated in the administration of the University with its own representatives and in the chairs with its own members; it attracted the patronage of the Venetian patricians, repaying their gratitude with solemn orations, consisting of Greek students and graduates. In summary, in the 17th century, modern Greek knowledge was cultivated within the Patabian institution, which manifested itself with the return of Greek students to their homeland.
