“The Economics of War” is the theme of the Conference organized by the Law School of Aristotle University and the Hellenic National Defense University (HNDU), on Thursday, January 22, and Friday, January 23, 2026, in the Aristotle University Ceremony Hall. The conference will begin on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.

This is an extremely topical issue, which is being examined for the first time in Greece,” say the organizers, adding: “The conference will examine, in principle, the efforts of a country’s economy at war to meet the needs of war. It will also examine the issues faced by the economy of a country preparing for war and called upon to develop its defense industry for this purpose.” The Russian-Ukrainian conflict will be a case study at the conference for all countries involved and interested.

“The issue is approached from all its critical aspects, which were highlighted during the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, largely determining its development,” the organizers emphasize.

In particular, the following will be examined:

  • The fiscal and macroeconomic issues arising in the countries involved
  • The complex problems arising from the imposition of sanctions, both for the countries subject to them and for the countries imposing them
  • International cooperation aimed at safeguarding a country’s security,
  • The protection of energy and critical infrastructure, which are popular targets for belligerents and directly affect their economy, if not the outcome of the war itself,
  • The development of a dual-use defense industry in times of peace.
