The Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, as part of the TouchingART  program of the NGO amaka, is hosting the multisensory and participatory exhibition of tactile works “A Journey into Tactile Art” in the foyer of its amphitheater until Sunday, February 1, 2026.

The exhibition is part of the Foundation’s broader accessibility program, which aims to create a welcoming and equal environment for all visitors, and is another step towards facilitating access to art and cultivating a unique cultural experience for all, without barriers. Admission is free.

The exhibition, which is open to all identities and abilities—sighted and blind visitors alike—presents tactile works based on the Foundation’s permanent collection, with audio descriptions in Greek, soundscapes, Braille, and adapted guided tours. The exhibition attempts to overturn the traditional, visually-centric reading of art, activating all the senses and repositioning the body and touch at the center of the interpretive process. The audience is invited to touch, listen, explore, and interact with the works, thus entering into a process of multisensory understanding where touch and sound play an equally decisive role.

As part of the exhibition, experiential tours are conducted by guides who are blind and who participated in the artistic research and creation of the works. Through the tours, the public is invited to explore art through all their senses, interact with the works, and listen to the experiences of people with blindness, discovering in practice what museum accessibility means. Participation in the tours is free of charge, but online booking is required.

The interdisciplinary team at amaka consists of visual artists, musicians, sound researchers, art therapists, and psychologists with experience in approaching art as a tool for integration, empowerment, and communication, as well as consultants with experience in blindness.

The creative practice TouchingART suggests that museum accessibility is an organic process of co-production and not simply a provision. It is an art therapy-informed practice that explores sensory awareness, the subjective relationship with the image, imagination, and memory as parts of the aesthetic response. The TouchingArt program is implemented as part of the program “Creative Greece – Promoting Universal Accessibility of People with Disabilities to Culture” with funding and under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture.

*For people with blindness, the exhibition is accessible with an escort.
