On Sunday 20 October, the Telecommunications Museum participates in the activities of the exhibition “The Restoration of Optimism“, which takes place at the Athens Municipal Gallery (Leonidiou & Myllerou, Metaxourgio) with works from its permanent collections.
At 11.30-13.00, the Museum’s director Mrs. Nikoletta Liakostavrou and the historian-curator Mr. Sotiris Koutmanis will present telephotographs from the Museum’s rich collection, which are related to political and social events of the pre-dictatorship and dictatorship period, as well as of the”Metapolitefsi” period.
The Museum’s archive of telephotographs includes 13,320 telephotographs from 1949 to 1988. These are photographs depicting various aspects of the country’s political, social, sporting and cultural life, which were used to serve the photojournalistic reportage of the period. The whole set of telephotographs is digitized and part of it is available in the website of the Museum
The exhibition “The Restoration of Optimism” is part of the anniversary events of the Municipality of Athens “1974 and 1944: Athens celebrates its Freedom”, which also commemorates two important anniversaries for Athens: the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the city from German occupation and the 50th anniversary of the restoration of democracy.
In the works of the permanent collections of the exhibition, which include paintings, engravings, sculptures, drawings and constructions, curators Victoria Zygourou, Kostas Nikakis and Stacey Ventura include 18 young artists with contemporary artistic proposals, seeking to reflect on stories and experiences that have been milestones in the shaping of contemporary Greek history.
The exhibition will run until 3 November, while on selected dates parallel actions are hosted in the same space. You may seek more information in the website of City of Athens.
