The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy, as part of the “Special Tributes” series, is organising an event on the life and work of Georgios-Alexandros Maggakis on Wednesday, 6 March 2024 at 19:00 in the Senate Chamber of the Hellenic Parliament.

Georgios-Alexandros Maggakis (1922-2011) was a professor of Criminal Law and politician. He participated – and distinguished himself – in the National Resistance during the Occupation. After liberation, he practised law and taught at the University of Freiburg in Germany as a visiting professor and at the Law School of the University of Athens. During the dictatorship he was arrested for his anti-dictatorial activities and imprisoned. He was released from prison in 1972 and fled to Heidelberg, where he taught at the university alongside the anti-dictatorship struggle. In 1974, he returned to Greece and participated in the Government of National Unity as a member of the ‘New Forces’, which then joined the Union of the Centre in the elections. In 1980, he joined PASOK and then became governor of the National Bank. In 1982 he became Minister of Justice. He was vice-president of the National Council for the Claim of Germany’s debts to Greece, and in 1996 he became president of the ‘United National Resistance’, founded in 1974 by all resistance organisations.
