As part of the events honoring and commemorating those executed at the Kokkinia Blockade, organized by the Municipality of Nikaia-Agios Ioannis Rentis, the hybrid video documentary “Round Up Project|” will be screened on Friday, October 3, at 8:00 p.m., at the Madra Blokou Kokkinias (102A Ilioupoleos Street), the hybrid video documentary “Round Up Project|PERIKYKLOMA – Kokkinia 1979 – Kokkinia 2017” (22 minutes long).
In addition to artist and researcher Mary Zygouri, the event will be attended by her collaborators, the participating “protagonists” of the performance. They will talk about their experience of this collective act of remembrance, offering their own perspective on its significance today.
The screening is being held to mark the eighth anniversary of the collective performance “Perikyloma” (2017), which took place at the Madra Blokou Kokkinias as part of Documenta 14 (Athens-Kassel).
The “ROUND-UP Project” was a six-month artistic and research project inspired by Maria Karavela’s multimedia show “Kokkinia” (1979). The artistic process, through the activation of M. Karavela’s archive, a three-month performance seminar with high school students from the area, interviews, and performative gestures created new relationships and connections between the community and collective memory. Mary Zygouri approached collective memory as an open field of dialogue, proposing a vital, embodied relationship with history and memory.
The ROUND-UP project highlights the importance of art and education in the process of historical and social reinterpretation and aims to preserve and strengthen the city’s historical consciousness and collective memory.
