Dimitris Imellos (1967-2024), one of the most talented and beloved actors of his generation, passed away prematurely after a long battle with cancer. In addition to his great performances on television and in the theatre, the great actor leaves in people’s memories his fighting spirit, his determination to work and the dignified end of his life.
Informed of the loss of Dimitris Imellos, the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, said:
“Dimitris Imellos was one of the most talented and accomplished actors of his generation. He made the most of his robust theatrical gifts to give us unique performances in every role he played. Testimony irrefutable to his talent, but also to the painstaking friction in the roles he tackled, their origins from a wide range, from classical literature to the contemporary repertoire. But also his selective passages from film and the big screen, and his collaborations with our greatest stages and directors.
His talent shone through early on, as he had the, quite rightly, honour of being the first recipient of the coveted “Horn Award”. The magnitude of his loss is, sadly, further compounded by the fact that he passed away at his most creative and mature age and at the height of his career on the stage. His loss deprives Art of a dedicated servant who still had much to give.”
Dimitris Imellos became beloved by a modern generation of viewers, who got to know him through his performances in films such as “The Tailor“, “Bank Bang“, but also in the role of a policeman in the ALPHA TV series “Sasmos“. Furthermore, he taught for several years at acting schools and Regional and Municipal Theatres. The management of the Patras Municipal Theatre, for example, said farewell to the actor: “He was a generous Teacher with ethics and kindness, a great Man who collaborated for more than 9 years with our School and, from the first moment, made us feel the aura of the great Artist. We bid farewell to Dimitris Imellos with gratitude and express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
