On the 80th anniversary of the dropping of atomic bombs on human targets in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, nuclear powers are once again flirting with disaster. At the same time, governments are promoting nuclear power plants as a supposed solution to the problem of energy sufficiency, but also as a step toward acquiring nuclear weapons.

The constant nuclear threat has not brought peace, as wars continue in dozens of places around the world. Propaganda by the powerful is escalating, while over $100 billion is wasted every year on nuclear arsenals. The 15,000 active nuclear warheads, 1,800 of which are on standby, do not promote peace but perpetuate fear as a means of control and securing geopolitical interests.

The major nuclear disasters in Chernobyl and Fukushima are a genuine continuation of the nuclear threat, supposedly for “peaceful use.” The risks of large-scale accidents, radiation leaks, nuclear waste disposal, and health threats remain unresolved problems.

There is a need to develop a dynamic anti-nuclear movement in order to:

  • We must demand nuclear disarmament and the implementation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), adopted in 2017, as a practical rejection of the threat of mass extermination as a means of coercion.
  • Let us demand truth, justice, denuclearization, and peace.
  • Let’s say NO to nuclear weapons, YES to Peace and Nonviolence.
  • We must reject nuclear energy for electricity production, which is not a “green” solution but a dangerous, costly, and technologically dependent technology that leaves behind radioactive waste for thousands of years and a legacy of risk for future generations.
