The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in the presence of the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni and guests from Greece and abroad, inaugurated the new lighting of the sanctuary of Poseidon, at the cape of Sounion.

The Ministry of Culture, in 2004, on the occasion of the Olympic Games, proceeded with the illumination of the sanctuary of Poseidon, offering a new visual experience, enhancing Sounion as an international destination for thousands of visitors. Twenty years later, technology has made leaps and bounds. The lighting, which highlights, in a unique way, the archaeological and architectural significance of the monument, giving it new dimensions, was undertaken by Eleftheria Deko and her collaborators.

Lina Mendoni, in her greeting, stressed: “The lighting of the monument and its immediate surroundings, without harmful interventions and alterations to its physiognomy, effectively and uniformly highlights its volume, plasticity and geometry. It was a complex exercise, requiring specialized studies, and, and, in this case, the partnership between the public and private sectors offers our country, in a short time, standard and innovative projects that contribute to the upgrading of our international image“.

The lighting event ended with a concert by the distinguished Greek composer Stavros Xarchakos, who through his music paid tribute to the cultural heritage of Greece. His melodies travelled from Sounion to the whole world through the performances of Dimitris Basis, Iro Saia, and Zacharias Karounis.
