The Ministry of Culture, through the competent Ephorate, is proceeding with the installation of lighting for the promotion and security of the archaeological site of ancient Evropos, a particularly important city of ancient Macedonia. The ancient city of Evropos has been continuously inhabited from the 5th pre-Christian millennium BC until the 6th post-Christian century. The archaeological site that can be visited today includes part of the cemetery, which dates back to Roman and early Christian times. With the implementation of the lighting project the needs for night-time safety lighting in the areas for visitors to tour and walk around, based on the lighting levels required per site, will be adequately covered.
The Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni said: “Ancient Evropos was an important city at the core of the Macedonian kingdom, with a timeless history, as evidenced by the excavation research in the city and its cemeteries. With the operation of the Information Centre by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kilkis, the information of visitors about the timeless history of ancient Europos, the city and its cemeteries has been upgraded. With the illumination of the archaeological site, which hosts a variety of cultural events, we enhance the safety of the site, its aesthetics and functionality”.
The lighting covers the night-time operation of the public service buildings, the events area, the walkways and the parking area. At the same time, security lighting – distinguishable from the rest of the archaeological site due to its special character – is provided in the cemetery and burial monuments, the tour corridor before the burial complex and the area surrounding the cemetery.
