In a short distance from the Herodium, at the junction of Erechtheion and N. Kallisperis Streets, a white marble statue of a nude male figure in the type of Hermes Ludovisi was found within a one-metre-wide pit, as part of a supervision project for the installation of a gas network. The work was placed inside a structure built of rectangular bricks and was found in fairly good condition.
In this area, south of the Acropolis, during the imperial period (1st-5th century AD) some of the most splendid urban villas of Athens were built. These buildings, evidence of a city that was the object of admiration and attraction for wealthy cultured bourgeoisie, were richly decorated with mosaic floors and sculptures, works of the famous Neo-Attic workshops.
The staff of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Athens City, after completing the documentation of the find, will ensure its safe transport to the conservation laboratories, so that the work can receive the necessary care.
