In the summer of 2024, during the execution of a sewerage network project, foundations of walls forming an arch in plan were found within the settlement of Oreoi and near the Castle.

The excavation that followed brought to light part of an early Byzantine basilica, the floor of which was paved with bricks. The walls are made of rough and semi-rough stones, ceramics and clay, while the exterior is covered with a thin layer of whitewash.

The basilica dates back to the 6th century, at a time when the diocese of Oreos, together with the other four dioceses of Evia, belonged to the metropolis of Corinth. It is a very important find that complements our knowledge of the 5th and 6th centuries in the region, as only a few ecclesiastical sculptures had been found in the past, some of which are embedded in newer churches.
