Following the completion of the project “Population movements and material culture: digital mapping of Halkidiki from Prehistory to Historical Times”, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Halkidiki and Mount Athos announces the launch of the digital applications and the provision to the public of the modernized information area of ancient Olynthos.

Ancient Olynthos, the most important city of Halkidiki of the 5th century BC, the most important economic-military centre of the region, which was destroyed in 348 BC by the Macedonian King Philip II, is an example of an organised city and an invaluable source of knowledge about everyday life in the late classical period.

With the modernization of the existing information room in the archaeological site and its transformation into a modern Digital Information Centre called AnODIC (AncientOlynthosDigitalInfomationCenter), an attractive, interactive environment was created that offers the visitor in a comprehensible and entertaining way the course of this important city in space and time with texts in Greek and English, photographs, drawings, reconstructions.

The new space offers the visitor touch screens and projection surfaces that present:

Digital timeline

All events and milestones of the history of ancient Olynthos through an interactive timeline invite visitors to an entertaining and educational journey into the past.

Digital interactive floor plan

A virtual tour of the archaeological site that reveals the evolution of the city through the buildings and objects of its inhabitants, the architectural remains and archaeological finds.

Digital Showcase

The material culture of ancient Olynthos comes alive through three-dimensional models that the visitor can “touch” and study from all sides, guided by the easy-to-understand texts that accompany them.

Stories of the people of research

From the first visit of the first researchers to Olynthos to modern research, visitors discover through photographic material and testimonies how a great city comes to light.

Video Installation

Short narratives of great moments that marked the life of the city compose an original audiovisual installation that is projected on five different surfaces using mainly the technique of animation with an original visual approach.

After climbing the hill, through the digital guide application for Android and iOS mobile phones entitled “Colonies of Halkidiki in space and time”, the visitor has the opportunity to discover what is hidden under the city, to listen to an original experiential narrative in the form of fiction by a girl of the 4th century BC, and with the AR version, to see the past come to life before his eyes! The applications are accessible through the website of the Halkidiki and Mount Athos Antiquities Ephorate at the link  https://www.efachagor.gr/apps/ or by scanning QR codes at the entrance and at points of the archaeological site.
