The book The Wrath of the Sultan: Autographed decrees issued by Mahmut II in 1821 presents a selection of documents from the archival record series of autograph decrees issued by Sultan Mahmut II in 1821, concerning the beginning of the Greek Revolution, translated from Ottoman Turkish into Greek. This series consists mainly of incoming documents, proposals from the grand viziers with the sultan’s autographed decrees added subsequently in the header. These documents are an important source for examining the Ottoman reaction to the Greek Revolution, at the highest administrative level. As revealed in the documents, the ‘wrath of the sultan’ was just the first step in formulating and implementing a policy aiming to stifle the Greek Revolution, which brought about changes in the Empire itself.
