The National Library of Greece continues the cycle of events “Logos 15” curated by the President of the Board of Trustees of the National Library of Greece, Stavros Zoumboulakis.

The second event is entitled “Translating ancient Chinese texts” and will take place on Thursday 19 June 2025, from 19:00 to 21:00, at the Book Tower of the National Library of Greece, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre.

China is a country of fundamental texts on human thought, written in a language that few people in Europe and far fewer in Greece know. Sotiris Halikias learned the difficult language (especially its ancient version) and undertook the enormous task of translating into Greek some of the basic texts of Chinese thought. The enormous apparent translation difficulties stem both from the very writing of these texts and from the particular spiritual world they express, quite different from the Western one. This difficulty becomes more acute when they are to be translated into Greek, since their rendering must be done in a way that does not render them pale versions of ancient Greek texts.

The event is organized with the collaboration of the Centre for the Study of Ancient Greek and Chinese Culture (KELKIP), on behalf of which Stelios Virvidakis, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, University of Athens, will speak.
