On Sunday, July 6, the festival “The Healing Powers of Art” begins with a tribute to the eminent scientist and doctor from Kymi, Georgios Papanikolaou. The fascinating life journey of Georgios Papanikolaou is presented through an exhibition of comic artworks by the award-winning visual artist Petros Christoulias, which served as the material for the creation of the book “Dr. Pap. The Life of the Pioneer Doctor G.N. Papanikolaou.”

Petros Christoulias

Georgios Papanikolaou, a leading figure in medical science, is best known for developing a test for women’s health that has saved countless lives. His work not only transformed the landscape of cervical cancer detection but also inspires us to explore the intersections of science, medicine, and art.

Author and illustrator Petros Christoulias, after intensive research in archival sources, with great sensitivity and maintaining historical accuracy, creates a dramatic atmosphere where the characters of the narrative move between Greece, Europe, and America. Christoulias’s new and original approach, through clear visual storytelling, offers a powerful introduction as well as a deep insight into the remarkable pioneering work of humanity’s benefactor, Georgios Papanikolaou.

On July 6, the day of the exhibition’s opening, Christoulias’s book will be presented at the Museum venue. His work honors the pioneering doctor’s legacy and will be publicly presented for the first time in Kymi, the birthplace of Georgios Papanikolaou.

The event will be welcomed by the Mayor of Kymi-Aliveri, Nikos Barakos.

Participants include Papanikolaou’s niece, Yuli Kokkori (daughter of Nasos Papanikolaou, Georgios’s older brother), a doctor and researcher, and the director and theater scholar Georgina Kakoudaki. The creator, Petros Christoulias, will speak about his approach to the life and work of Georgios Papanikolaou through the language of comics and will guide us through the exhibition. Exhibition curation and coordination: Iosif Vivilakis.
