In 1537, Pedro Nunes, a Portuguese mathematician devoted to experimentation, studied certain navigation aspects, and realised that a ship sailing on a fixed compass bearing follows a spiralling course or curve that intersects all the meridians at the same angle. His observations determined the neologism ‘loxodromia’ later on.

In his new solo exhibition, Vasilis Thalassinos borrows the nautical term attempting to translate a different kind of long-distance and stubborn voyage, that of painting. He presents us with artworks created in the last decade through a constant choice of precariousness. Pencils, markers, acrylics, water-soluble oils, glues, canvases, premium and second-rate papers, all entangled and divergent; varied paintings, souvenirs of chaotic routes and pursuits of the now 43-year-old artist, which can best be viewed as mementos of a long-road journey.

As he himself states: ‘Of all the languages that humans have created to discard and tidy up—even if only elementarily—their everyday quirks, it is the language of visual arts that enables me to do as I please, pursuing contradictions of the ongoing social war, heterogeneity, street oddity, transformation of errors, and uninterrupted joy.’
The exhibition is hosted at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation from May 22nd to June 1st inviting our gaze to put, even for a little while, the art of painting at the epicentre.
