The curator of the Branch of the National Gallery of Corfu, Ms Marina Papasotiriou, who introduces the exhibition, writes:

On the occasion of the title of the exhibition Exercises of the Gaze, another way to navigate through the works is proposed. The word exercise means perseverance, patience, methodicalness, critical thinking, solution. The gaze, on the other hand, means sensation, tension, observation, admiration, surprise and much more. What possibly draws the viewer’s gaze and leads him or her towards the exercise in this particular exhibition is the materials of which the works are made. And not to be limited to the gaze and vision, materials mean texture. They can even mean smell and touch. So one approach to the works could be multi-sensory.

Speaking of senses, these are the primary means by which one perceives the world around one. It is perhaps safe to say that vision occupies a dominant position among the senses as it contributes to the primary formation and conception of reality due to its immediacy. However, it is not always self-evident that the visual experience is common to all, with the interpretation of the stimuli arising from it being universal, as the individual’s experiences, education and culture play an important role in the way he or she interprets that experience.” The exhibition includes works in different materials and media, drawings, paintings, photography, constructions and installations. In the artists’ texts we can trace keywords, such as truth, silence, identity, self, memory, experience, imagination, that can guide us in viewing their works.
