The two exhibitions hosted by the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation at the Museums of Athens and Andros are the natural continuation of a friendship. Henri Cartier-Bresson and his wife Martine Franck were dear friends of Basil and Elise Goulandris.

It is no coincidence that Cartier-Bresson inaugurated the new wing of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Andros in 1987 with an exhibition of 150 of his photographs, selected by him, while to Martine Franck we owe one of the most beautiful portraits of Elise Goulandris, photographed in Gstaad in December 1999, just six months before Elise’s death in July 2000.

The Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, with the contribution of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation, honours the unique artist couple Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) and Martine Franck (1938-2012) with a double photographic tribute that will be presented simultaneously in both its museums, in Athens and Andros, from 3 July to 27 October 2024.

HENRI CARTIER–BRESSON – ATHENS

The tribute to Henri Cartier-Bresson that will be presented at the Museum of the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation in Athens consists of two separate thematic sections, in order to present his best-known photographs while avoiding the very familiar paths: the first is dedicated to his unique album Images à la sauvette (The Decisive Moment) and the second, entitled Greece, includes photographs taken during his three trips to Greece (1937, 1953 and 1961).

MARTINE FRANCK – ANDROS

The retrospective exhibition of Martine Franck organized by the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Andros, entitled Looking at the Others, includes approximately 150 of her photographs as well as important archival material, enabling visitors to follow the entire evolution of her artistic career from her first steps in 1963 until her death in 2012.
