ΕΜΣΤ organizes a series of guided tours with the artist Katerina Zacharopoulou in the retrospective exhibition of Penny Siopis – For Dear Life and at the group exhibition WOMEN, together, with works from the collection of ΕΜΣΤ.
These guided tours aim to get to know the works and the important South African artist of Greek origin Penny Siopis, in her first major exhibition in her country of origin, as well as the exclusive presentation of women artists in the renewed exhibition of part of the Museum’s collection. Both exhibitions are part of the EMΣT’s major cycle of exhibitions What if women ruled the world? which will run until January 2025.
Penny Siopis was born in 1953 in the city of Freiburg to Greek parents. She currently resides in Cape Town. She became known as early as the 1980s and 1990s for her historically and culturally charged paintings, which were critical of colonialism, apartheid, racism and sexism. In her artistic career she experimented with a multitude of media, creating a multidimensional body of work that has made her one of the most important artistic voices of her generation both within and outside the African continent, with a particular influence on the younger generation of artists, a reference point for contemporary anti-colonial and feminist art. A walk through the exhibition will bring us close to a powerful voice of the Greek diaspora and connect us to political and personal stories both intimate and experientially poignant.
The exhibition WOMEN, together is the first re-exhibition of the Museum’s collection since its inaugural presentation in 2020, at the permanent seat of the ΕΜΣΤ, in the former FIX brewery factory. The exhibition presents works from the ΕΜΣΤ collection, including the first presentation of a series of works from the donation of the D.Daskalopoulos Collection to the Museum. The exhibition WOMEN, together presents a total of 49 works by 25 artists of different generations and origins, ten of whom are Greek. The presentation also includes an iconic work by Etel Adnan (Lebanon), which is a new long-term loan to the Museum.
