Walls, neighborhoods steeped in history, unknown spots in the urban fabric, a monastery on the border between two worlds. For the twelfth year, we share stories from familiar and unfamiliar places and cultural routes inside and outside the city.

Sunday, September 14 – 10:30 a.m.

“The Walls of Thessaloniki”

With archaeologist Tasos Papadopoulos as our guide, we follow the line of the western walls of Thessaloniki on a journey through time, connecting antiquity with the present day. Through fragments of memory, inscriptions, and secret stories, we approach the important with the seemingly insignificant, the great with the obscure, the grand narratives with the adventures of people. Magnificent views of the western part of the city and a multitude of stories that have left tangible traces behind them make up an experience with a strong element of urban exploration.

Saturday, September 20 – 5:30 p.m.

“East of the Center”

The old Hamidiye Avenue, Angelaki Street, the White Tower, an area full of memories, multiple interpretations of monuments that conceal the complex identity of Thessaloniki. Guided by Tassos Papadopoulos and Evi Karkiti, we walk familiar streets, stand in front of busts, old cinemas, and squares, searching for those invisible traces that connect us to the cultural history of the city, some old stories that are now slipping from memory, but also places connected with the pleasures of the people of Thessaloniki in times gone by, with their anxieties and their deepest hopes.

Sunday, September 21 – 8:30 a.m.

“In the Shadow of Athos”

From Ouranoupoli to the Monastery of Zygou, Tasos Papadopoulos takes us on a tour of monuments and landscapes that unite centuries of Byzantine tradition, ancient history, and folk legends. Along the way, we encounter the tower of Prosforio, the traces of Xerxes’ canal, ancient Akanthos, and the imposing monastic complex of the Monastery of Zygou. On our tour, we “walk” with Athanasios the Athonite, always under the shadow of the lofty Mount Athos. The 4,400-meter route (round trip) is easy and offers a unique view of Sithonia and the sea, while at the same time bringing us closer to symbolic figures. In addition to Athanasios the Athonite, we also “meet” Deinocrates, Xerxes, and other historical figures from antiquity to modern times.

Note: Walking shoes are required as access to the Monastery of Zygou is only possible on foot.

Saturday, September 27 – 5:30 p.m.

“From Tower to Tower”

With archaeologist and tour guide Electra Valkanou, we start from the tower of the western wall (Top Hané) and follow in the footsteps of history to Thessaloniki’s most famous landmark. Our route connects points that unite the past with the present, squares that have changed many names, legendary restaurants and hotels from whose balconies writers admired the sunset. A floating cinema linked to dark pages of history, the old beach and the port, as depicted in the work of Theodoros Angelopoulos but also in the imagination of the city’s inhabitants, people who spring from the belle époque era, and places associated with recent events, make up a unique journey through time.
