The New Heraklion Film Club brings this year’s film season to a close with a special screening. On Monday, March 30, at 9:00 p.m., at the Vitsentzos Kornaros Cinema, the audience will travel to Buenos Aires through the absolute masterpiece by the great filmmaker Wong Kar-wai, “Happy Together” (1997).

This screening is particularly significant for the Club, as the closing film was selected by the city’s own cinephile audience. Through a three-day open vote on social media, viewers selected this film from among excellent choices, demonstrating their love for atmospheric, romantic, and aesthetically rich cinema.

A few words about the film: Two men travel to Buenos Aires with the hope of a fresh start. Very soon, however, their relationship falls apart and their paths diverge. Without the money to return, one stays behind and tries to survive, working and living alone, while the other drifts through casual relationships. When they meet again, wounded—both literally and figuratively—they will attempt to start over, recreating a cycle of dependence, tension, and fragile tenderness.

Wong Kar-wai captures this tumultuous romantic journey with a camera that maintains a constant intensity and an aesthetic freedom that mirrors the emotional volatility of his characters. Between close distances and insurmountable chasms, “Happy Together” becomes a melancholic meditation on decay, codependence, and the fragility of “togetherness.” Winner of the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as other major international accolades, it remains one of the most iconic works of contemporary world cinema.
