At the Cycling Track of the Municipality of Chania in Kathiana was today the Mayor of Chania, Panagiotis Simandirakis, on the occasion of the completion of work on the track of the emblematic sports project. The Mayor was accompanied by the Deputy Mayors, Technical Works, Michael Kalogridakis and Sports, Stelios Michaelakis, while from Athens went to Chania the Director of the Cycling Federation of Greece and international track referee, Vladimir Petsas.
The Dutch architect and international manufacturer of cycling tracks, Sander Duma, under whose supervision the track was built, was also present, as well as officials of the Technical Services Department of the Municipality, representatives of cycling clubs and representatives of the contractor company, which is carrying out the project.
In statements following the autopsy at the site, Simandirakis said: “We are here today at the Kathiana Cycling Track, which after 20 years is starting to function and give what we ought to give as a local community to our athletes. With a very great effort over the last few years, by securing a very high level of funding, approaching €8 million, and with a very good cooperation between our Technical Department and the contractor, we have a very successful result. Work is progressing smoothly, it will be a project that will be completed ahead of the timetables that were originally set. I am extremely pleased to announce that next March we will be able to officially open and race on this track, which will attract athletes and dozens of training teams from all over Europe.”
The architect Mr. Duma expressed his assessment that the track will not need further intervention for the next 50 years, stating that this project is one of the 24 cycling tracks he has built around the world, stressing that it is an infrastructure that can host international cycling events.
