The opening ceremony of the 9th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, “Everything Must Change. Radical Intelligence. Thessaloniki 9,” organized and implemented by the Thessaloniki Museum of Art, is articulated through gatherings, works, and other creative expressions that function as hints and predictions, joyful gestures of questioning, tangible invocations, and thoughts about the Biennale. These, and whatever follows, form a chord of tonalities with a “permanent” structure and an “elusive” center, leading up to the major event in May–July 2026.
The exhibition “Upside Down (science fiction as change)” is complemented by the ritualistic confusion of workshops, screenings, performances, and live music, an unhierarchical mix that runs through this entire Biennale in its attempt to explore, among other things, the possibility of critical fabulation, as established in the work of Saidiya Hartman, or the possibility of the doing of the study and the revolutionary perspective of playing in its different forms.
The 9th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art is curated by independent curator and art historian Nadia Argyropoulou.
The Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art is co-funded by the European Union (ESPA – Central Macedonia Program).
