Following the recent violent incident and its consequences and given the ongoing threats against the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum, the exposed works of art, the employees and the administration, it was decided, after consultation between the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni and the Minister of Citizen Protection Michael Chrysochoidis, to upgrade the protection measures of the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum.

Cooperation between the National Gallery and the Centre for Security Studies (KE.ME.A) has already begun with the preparation of a security study.

The National Gallery, in the context of its institutional role and mission, remains strictly committed to article 16 of the Constitution, which unconditionally guarantees freedom of artistic expression, article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, the established case law of the European Court of Human Rights and the case law of the country’s courts.

The works of art, which have been attacked, are subjected to the necessary actions and procedures for their maintenance and restoration, where extensive damage is shown. At the same time, the terms and conditions of their safe reexposure are examined with the contribution of experts.
