As part of the initiatives that will precede the Comicdom CON Athens 2025 festival, the Italian Cultural Institute of Athens meets the famous cartoonist Francesco Tullio ALTAN.
The artist will discuss his long career and his work with journalist Yannis Koukoulas and cartoonist Panagiotis Mitsobonos. The discussion will be followed by a “cartoon dialogue” with comic book creator Spyros Derveniotis, during which the two cartoonists will explore common themes using the particular characteristics of their artistic profiles.
Francesco Tullio-Altan was born in Treviso, Italy, in September 1942. After studying in Bologna he attended the School of Architecture in Venice. In 1970 he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he worked for the Brazilian cinema. In 1975 he returned to Italy and in the same year he created Pimpa. In the meantime, he published several books of sketches and comic stories: Colombo, Ada, Macao, Friz Melone, Franz, Cuori Pazzi, Zorro Bolero and the strip Trino. Many of these books have also been published abroad. Pimpa has starred in four animated series and four 30-minute specials for a total of over 600 minutes of animation. Over the years, she has won numerous comic awards and major journalistic accolades. Exhibitions of his works have been held in many cities in Italy and abroad.
