Argyro Chioti, director and dramatist, has been appointed as the new artistic director of the National Theatre, following an open call for expressions of interest and after the relevant opinion of the Special Evaluation and Selection Committee, which was established by the decision of the Minister of Culture and the Deputy Minister of Culture (Hellenic Ministry of Culture/569803/24.12.2024).

Under the current institutional framework (par. 13 of Art. 3 of Law 2273/1994 (A’ 233), as amended by par. 1 of Art. 76 of Law 4795/2021 (A’ 62)), the Special Committee for Evaluation and Selection notified the final report to the political leadership of the Ministry of Culture with a reasoned and individualized recommendation regarding its judgment (“Final List of Candidates”), on the basis of which the candidacy of Argyros Chiotis was selected for the position of Artistic Director of the National Theatre, for a three-year term of office. The political leadership accepted the recommendation, evaluation and ranking of the Committee.

It is recalled that the Special Committee for the Evaluation and Selection of Candidates was constituted by the following:

–    Konstantinos Christodoulou, Professor of the Law School of the University of Athens (Chairman of the Committee)

–    Giannis Bezos, actor, director

–     Filareti Komninou, actress

–     Nikos Chatzopoulos, actor, director, architect

–     Prodromos Tsinikoris, director, actor, dramatist

Argyro Chioti works in Greece and France as a director, actress and theatre teacher. She graduated as an actress from the first Drama School “Morphes” of the “Empros” Theatre (2000) and holds a degree in Theatre Studies and a Master 2 degree in directing and dramaturgy (“Theorie et Pratique des Arts”) from the University of Provence, France (2006). In 2006 she co-founded the theatre group VASISTAS, active first in France and then in Greece. Her oeuvre includes classical texts, contemporary theatrical writings and works on the borders of the arts. Through her performances that travel steadily abroad and other collaborations, she maintains an active and creative relationship with important European stages and theatre organizations (such as Théâtre des 13 Vents, Théâtre de la Bastille, Théâtre Liberté -Chateauvallon, Comédie des Reims).

Her most recent productions are “Refreshment Room” at the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, “Big and Small Ships” by Efthymis Philippou (2023) for the Elefsis – European Capital of Culture, “Erotokritos” by Vincenzo Kornaros at the State Theatre of Northern Greece, The Boy’s “Halepas” at the Onassis Foundation’s Onassis Cultural Centre (co-production with the Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione of Italy), Aristophanes’ “Frogs” at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, Euthymes Philippou’s “Water of Cologne” at the National Theatre.
