Maritsa Travlos will be exhibiting part of her work at Homo Faber 2024“The Journey of Life” along with other exceptional artisans, from 1 to 30 September 2024, at Giorgio Cini Foundation, Venice.

For this third edition, visitors will be taken on a journey through a human life, exploring life’s standout moments and everyday simplicities through the lens of craftsmanship. Meaningful milestones will be celebrated with special objects handcrafted by skilled artisans according to specific techniques. From childhood to travel, romance to dreams, Homo Faber 2024 will showcase the craftsmanship behind the objects that accompany life’s most precious moments.

Luca Guadagnino and architect Nicolò Rosmarini will bring their vision and creativity to the art direction of this event. Exploring and developing The Journey of Life, a concept by Hanneli Rupert (Vice Chair of the Michelangelo Foundation), their staging will immerse visitors in a rich human narrative that weaves its way through Fondazione Giorgio Cini located on San Giorgio Maggiore island, in Venice. It is a unique opportunity to visit the magnificent spaces of this world-renowned cultural institution, a long term partner of the Michelangelo Foundation.

About the Artist

Maritsa Travlos’ background in painting and drawing led her to experiment with ceramics in the beginning of the 1990s. She realized early on that she was interested in color and saw porcelain as a material for painting. Travlos believes that ceramics offer endless possibilities and the journey of creating is what she loves the most – the constant contact with the material and the process of thinking about creating new work daily. Self-taught, she works with English white porcelain, which she stores in a controlled environment to keep it moist. This process involves creating hundreds of different hues by mixing only 20 basic colors, made from high-temperature organic materials from China -not available in Greece- to dye her porcelain creations. Travlos employs custom molds, multiple firings, and hand modelling to shape the final object. The first firing occurs at 800°C, at which stage the colors are not yet visible, and the second firing is conducted at 1.280°C. The fish depicted in Maritsa Travlos’ artwork are crafted from colored mass of porcelain to reflect the grandeur of nature, as porcelain is intrinsically linked to earth and soil, while the use ofplexiglassoffers transparency from every angle for the viewer to observe.
