The Marginalia Gallery presents an exhibition of paintings by Lila Papoula, entitled “Thickets.”
The artist herself says:
“Landscapes and Places. Places as transformations. Because a landscape can indeed be a landscape, that is, outside. But it can also be the transformation of an experience from a place, a space that was once inhabited, which may no longer exist, but whose traces, inside, are like messages hidden in the folds of memory, saying that this outside still inhabits me.
Notes here and there, photographs from previous years like a diary, pop up unexpectedly, recollections in the making. A landscape like a biographical canvas. Because it has already existed in the projections within the present of my own past from the future.
Thickets are dense clusters of branches, foliage, and shrubs. Natural refuges of memory that, completely unexpectedly and imperceptibly, at certain moments may reveal something of what they had kept hidden until then. Spaces of transition from the past to tomorrow and to the present, from light to darkness, but also from darkness to light.”
