With particular satisfaction, the local community of Varnava, Attica welcomed the registration of the item “The Art of Embroidered Bread in Varnava, Attica” in the National Index of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Greece.

Embroidered bread as the final material product of the art of embroidery is not just a food item, but carries multiple symbolisms for all members of the community of Varnava, as it was and continues to be associated with major religious festivals and life-cycle rituals.

That is why the “Art of embroidered bread” is a constituent element of the cultural identity of the community of Varnava, whose members even today wish and undertake to bequeath it not only to their children but also to younger members of the community, who they are not aware of it.
