We are pleased to inform you that the house/studio of the painter Nikos Nikolaos (1909-1986) in Aegina has been renovated and is now open to the public.

The painter Nikos Nikolaou settled in 1964 in Aegina with his wife Angela Nikolaou and their house became a regular meeting place for artists and intellectuals.

In 2019, the renovation of the house and its surroundings began and five guesthouses were created. Recently, the guesthouses were included in the list of the 10 best hotels in Greece for 2020, according to Conde Nast Traveler magazine.

The renovation was carried out with respect to the history of the painter and his wife Angela, maintaining the always warm hospitality atmosphere for which they were famous.

Starting from the front room of the house – the painter’s first studio, which he later used as a living room – and guided by the photographic archive and the family’s personal experiences, an attempt was made to place the works and objects in their original position, recreating the atmosphere in which Nicolaou lived.

The collection of works belongs to the family of Angela Nikolaou, to Thodoris, Christina, Daphne and Philip Zoumboulakis.

The surrounding area contributes to the sense of calmness that the visitor receives – right from the first steps. Pistachio, fig, olive and rosemary trees surround the main house and the individual buildings with aromas and colour.

The residents of the guesthouses have the opportunity to browse all the common areas and enjoy the sunset on the stone terraces, where the company of Aegina, Nikolaou, Moralis, Kapralos, Elytis, etc. used to meet every afternoon.

The sculpture “Aegina”, by I. Moralis (donated by Peggy Zoumboulakis), has been placed opposite the estate of N. Nikolaou, as a sign of the deep friendship that linked the two artists, but also as a landmark of a neighbourhood with houses of important artists.
