The Municipality of Agia proceeded to the improvement of rural roads in the periphery of the Municipal Unit of Agia by paving existing central rural dirt roads of the Community of Agia, as well as access to livestock facilities in the area. The project was funded by the “Antonis Tritsis” programme with a budget of 1,405,000 euros and is expected to contribute to reducing the cost of transporting products, to easier and faster access for agricultural machinery, as well as to faster and safer transport of perishable products. In this way, the competitiveness of farms will be improved, with a positive impact on farm income and the local rural economy.

In particular, the construction works of the rural road were completed within the framework of the project: “Melios” – “Valtos” – “EΕL” Agia, which was asphalted. The road starts from the estate southeast of the town of Agia and develops in a southerly direction from the junction of the Agia bypass of the Larissa-Agias-Agios-Agiokampos Provincial Road, crosses agricultural crops at the locations “Melios” and “Valtos”, then ends westwards on the rural road to the Agia Wastewater Treatment Plant. The total length of this rural road is approximately 3020m.

Also the rural road between Agia and Aetolofos was improved, with a total length of about 3680m. The road starts from the first agricultural crops, south of the town of Agia and crosses the estates of the area, in a south-western direction towards the settlement of Aetolofos.

The work implemented includes: excavation and placement of an underlying layer with crushed gravel for soil consolidation, paving works (base and sub-base construction) by spreading the material of each layer with graders to achieve the required geometry and then performing compaction works with rollers, construction of the asphalt roadbed with hot-mixed asphalt mix in a permanent installation using crushed aggregates from a quarry, and construction of the necessary technical works at selected road locations.
