On Monday, 10 March 2025, at 19:00, the Gerovassiliou Wine Museum will host Takis Mavrotas, Director of the Visual Arts Programme of the B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation, in a lecture:
Upliftment with the art of our time
From Picasso, De Chirico, Cocteau to Tsarouchis, Engonopoulos, Fasianos, Adamakos
On the occasion of the recent release of the book by Melissa Publications
Takis Mavrotas | Words and Art | 50 speeches
About the book and him they mention:
Eleni Arveler in her foreword: “Many have spoken of the erotic mania, of which “nothing is more fierce” (according to Justinian). For Takis Mavrotas, however, the “artistic mania”, a disease from which he has suffered since childhood, is more important. It is, I would say, his source talent, regardless of studies and degrees, that leads him to the right evaluation, this critical view, which exudes respect for the work and love for the artist. I would also like to underline the relationship he has developed with artists, because he always discovers and brings out the best in them.”
Giorgos Babiniotis on how the book functions for the reader: ‘as an introduction to the knowledge of visual art, an exercise in the technique of art reception, an introduction to art criticism, an introduction to the reader’s acquaintance with the ethos of an art critic and a form of poetic function of prose that serves criticism’, concluding that ‘there are some books that you must read. One such book is this book by T. Mavrotas and I congratulate him on it’.
Kostas Tsoklis stresses: “He loves everyone (and rightly so), because even the least gifted creator deserves at least respect and support. You never know… Although he prefers ‘art critic’ to ‘art historian’, he does not criticize anyone. He lets the expectations of the public today and the whims of tomorrow be the judge. He is a beam of light that highlights the work and illuminates the creator. His good word is not easily granted to all, he tells me. But he manages to turn denial into mere non-affirmation. I admire him. He is a sociable person, who avoids tensions and friction and thus protects himself and his chosen ones. He is my friend and supporter, I love and respect him. I thank him for what he has done for me and for my colleagues. For Art and for this place, which is our Land.”
As part of the lecture, the Wine Museum will be open to visitors from 18:00-19:00.
Free entrance.
