Ktima Gerovasilliou reports about the 2024 harvest:
This year, the winter was mild, with relatively high temperatures for the season (average January temperature of 7°C), no snow and several rainfalls throughout. No temperatures below freezing were recorded.
In spring, temperatures were not too low for the season (average temperature of 13°C) and there was a lot of rainfall, which favoured the growth of the plant. The month of March saw the most rainfall, especially in the first ten days, and on March 10, germination began, ten days earlier than last year. In April and May, there was no increase in temperature and rainfall decreased significantly. The last rainfall occurred at the beginning of May and flowering started on May 27, about 14 days earlier than last year.
In the summer, there was a sharp rise in temperature, especially in June (average temperature of 27 °C) and July (average temperature of 29 °C), which brought forward veraison (July 7) by 19 days compared with last year and the harvest (July 30) by 22 days.
In August there was a slight drop in temperature and no rainfall, which helped the harvest to run smoothly, while in September the temperature dropped significantly and the two beneficial rains that occurred helped the red varieties to ripen smoothly.
On July 30, the Chardonnay was harvested, followed by Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Merlot. On August 13, the harvest of Malagousia began, followed by Syrah, while in early September our Greek red varieties (Limnio, Mavroudi, Mavrotragano) and Assyrtiko were harvested. The harvest was completed on September 13, with Xinomavro.
The quantities of whites and reds were slightly reduced by 10%.
This year seems to be a very good year for the estate’s whites and rosés, which show rich varietal aromas and full flavour, and an excellent year for the reds, with concentrated varietal aromas and a full body.
