With a warm welcome from the audience, the 1st Panorama of Cypriot Films started on Tuesday 13 May 2025 at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, on the initiative of the House of Cyprus and its Director, Diomedes Nikita. During the opening ceremony, both Diomedes Nikita and official representatives of the Cypriot Embassy and organizations such as the International Short Film Festival of Drama, described the Panorama as a window to the world of Cypriot cinema. At the same time, as a bridge between the two countries – international representatives of the universal spirit of Greek culture.
Honoring the memory of one of the greatest Greek-Cypriot directors, the first screenings of Panorama focused on the work of Michael Cacoyannis. On the one hand, the documentary “Art is international only when it speaks the language of truth“-an approach to the life and work of Cacoyannis-was screened, followed by a screening of Cacoyannis’ 1971 film adaptation of Euripides’ The Trojan Women. Composed of an internationally renowned cast, starring Katherine Hepburn (Hecuba), Irene Papas (Helen), Vanessa Redgrave (Andromache), Geneviève Bujold (Cassandra), this film – rarely shown on the big screen – was a unique opportunity for those present to get in touch with different genres of high acting.
Despite the constant representation and distinction of Cypriot cinema in important festivals, the screening and distribution of Cypriot films in Greek cinemas remains limited, with the result that a large part of the Greek public is unaware of both contemporary and older Cypriot productions.
The Panorama aims to promote and further strengthen the relations of cooperation, as well as to develop a creative and fruitful dialogue between film professionals from Cyprus and Greece, through special presentations and open round table discussions that will facilitate networking and information, encouraging cooperation and the creative exchange of ideas, experiences and best practices between the two countries.
The Panorama will continue in the coming days. Film lovers can attend the screenings free of charge, with a zero ticket.
