In the packed Space D at Pireos 260, amid an atmosphere of excitement, memories, and anticipation for the future, the Athens Epidaurus Festival concluded its 2025 anniversary year with a special celebratory event.

On Tuesday, September 30, friends of the Festival witnessed two important events: the screening of the documentary 70 Years of the Athens Epidaurus Festival – Through Their Eyes and the presentation of the anniversary volume Seventy Acts.

ABOUT THE ANNIVERSARY VOLUME SEVENTY ACTS

The commemorative volume Seventy Acts is an impressive 730-page edition, a “dive into memory,” honoring the rich history of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival. It includes a total of 846 documents, drawn from catalogs and programs of the Organization, mixed with posters, photographs, scenographic studies, and personal notes. The material, sourced from the Archive of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, is supplemented by documents contributed by numerous institutions (National Theatre, National Theatre of Northern Greece, MIET/ELIA, ERT Archive, Benaki Museum/Photographic Archives, Dimitris Rontiris Archive of the Municipality of Piraeus, Amphitheater Spyros A. Evangelatos Archive, Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation, Alekos Fasianos Museum, Vakalo School, Giorgos Patsas Archive/Theatre Studies Department, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), as well as artists and collaborators of the Organization.

As the Chairman of the Board of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, Mr. Dimitris Passas, aptly states, “The catalog does not aim for a linear historical record of the Festival’s annual events. It aspires to blend the past with the present, embedding contemporary images and fragments within the older archival illustrations, so as to evoke emotions and associations.

The volume was curated by art historian and curator Panos Giannikopoulos, while the design and artistic direction were undertaken by the creative agency bend. The volume includes artistic interventions by Pinelopi Gerasimou, Leto Kattou, and Petros Moris with the publishing project AM, as well as by Phantom Investigations (Ino Varvariti and Giannis Delagrammatikas). The publication was directed by Katerina Evangelatou, Artistic Director of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, whose tenure concluded in August 2025.

ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY FILM THROUGH THEIR EYES

The Athens Epidaurus Festival recounts its 70-year history through the stories of people connected to it. Moving, funny, authentic, and personal, the stories of artists and collaborators weave together the fabric of the documentary Through Their Eyes, created by the Festival and elc productions.

Directors, actors, musicians, set designers, costume designers, theater scholars, choreographers, artistic directors, and technicians share their memories with us all, composing a unique mosaic of history and emotions. Their narratives are accompanied by rare photographic material, footage from rehearsals, and excerpts from iconic performances.

The documentary highlights important moments from the last seven decades, capturing the unseen side of the institution and its deep connection with the public. It is a film that honors our cultural heritage and at the same time looks to the future, with the hope that this great celebration of culture will continue for many years to come.
