The University of the Aegean and the Department of Sociology announce the launch of the English-language Master’s Program “Migration Studies: Management of Migratory and Refugee Flows in Europe,” for the academic year 2026-27. The Master’s Program offers a holistic approach to migration and forced displacement through an interdisciplinary lens, addressing one of the most critical and significant issues of contemporary history.

The Master’s program focuses on one of the most timely and compelling fields of study in the global academic community, offering valuable insights and in-depth analysis of migration and refugee issues. It provides a comprehensive educational framework at the graduate level, featuring a rich curriculum, international collaborations, and valuable fieldwork experience.

Graduate students are required to conduct field research and practical programs focusing on the vulnerability criteria of asylum seekers and displaced social groups, in accordance with their curriculum and applicable legislation, which is coordinated by the Fieldwork Coordinator of the Master’s Program and implemented in collaboration with participating and partner organizations.

“Field Research and Practical Programs with an Emphasis on Vulnerability Criteria for Asylum Seekers and Displaced Social Groups” is a required course in the third semester. The program is based on interdisciplinary collaboration among distinguished scholars (sociologists, legal scholars, anthropologists, psychologists, doctors, epidemiologists, international relations specialists, economists, and social scientists) from Greece and universities abroad, with the participation of official bodies and representatives of organizations with long-standing experience and involvement in the field. It is aimed at students as well as professionals working in the field who wish to broaden their knowledge and delve deeper into the pressing issue of population migration.

It is also suitable for the further academic development of those interested in pursuing humanitarian work, as well as professionals in the fields of health and mental health sciences, to familiarize themselves with the multidimensional nature of the phenomenon, critical theories as well as practical aspects of managing human mobility in a constantly and rapidly changing environment. By placing at the center of its academic program a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of migration, the necessity of supporting the integration process of refugees and migrants, as well as highlighting the opportunities arising from the ceaseless and unrelenting flow of people throughout the centuries, the Program focuses on key aspects related to the phenomenon of forced displacement, emphasizing its psychosocial nature and the multidimensionality of the integration process.

More specifically, this master’s program aims to analyze:

• contemporary trends in migration and their connection to the social, political, and historical context

• migration as discourse and narrative, and the influence of various actors in shaping it

• integration policies and exclusionary policies from a critical analytical perspective

• the refugee experience through personal narratives and testimonies, analyzing the refugee and migration journey through space and time

• the social implications for the formation of the identity of refugees and migrants

• vulnerable population groups, such as refugee minors and victims of torture, and the factors of risk and protection

• the sociology of health among mobile populations and the adoption of best practices in cultural mediation

• the basic principles of statistical demography and field epidemiology.

Since its inception, the Master’s program has been a key partner in the Erasmus Mundus Master’s Program “Migrations Transnationales-MITRA,” www.master-mitra.eu.
