The Master’s Program “European Societies and European Integration” explores the relationship and differences between the social, economic, and cultural practices of societies and institutions both within the European Union and in neighboring countries, in terms of national identities, social movements, economic structures, social democratization, religion, and modernization.
The objectives of this Master’s program are both to provide students with specialized academic knowledge and professional training in the field of European Studies, and to familiarize them with academic research into the fundamental issues facing European societies and the processes of convergence toward their social cohesion (integration). The M.A. program aims to enhance students’ professional qualifications, not through specialized professional training but through their systematic education on issues concerning European societies, the EU’s institutional framework, European policies, economic developments, the protection of human rights, methods of analyzing and processing social data, and migration/refugee flows.
Recognizing European and Euro-Mediterranean social formations as dynamic processes, the Master’s programme places particular emphasis on fostering collaborations among students, faculty, and researchers from neighboring countries, with the aim of both exploring the aforementioned factors that shape our shared future, as defined by the European Union, as well as the formulation and implementation of research programs that will propose potential pathways toward intercultural understanding and institutional, economic, and social convergence.
The Research Orientation
The Master’s program places an emphasis on research and encourages its students to participate in original research on the EU’s institutional and legal framework, the political system of the European Union (democracy, the rule of law, human rights), as well as on the primary and secondary analysis of European social, demographic, economic, and fiscal data, leading to international publications, thereby enhancing their professional and academic qualifications and, consequently, their high level of employability.
Cooperation with other European universities
It is possible, provided conditions permit, to organize an educational trip for students to Brussels or Luxembourg, including visits to European institutions, as well as within the framework of the European University Association (ERUA), in which the University of the Aegean participates (particularly within the framework of our collaboration with the University of Paris 8).
Finally, the teaching and research activities of the Master’s program are supported by: 1. the Social Informatics Laboratory, Statistics and Research Infrastructure, which maintains social data and conducts social research on contemporary issues such as migration/refugees, demographic trends, the agricultural sector, ethnic identities, cultural trauma, etc., and 2. The Laboratory of Social & Political Institutions, which specializes in research focused on institutional (treaty revision), legal (human rights protection, European citizenship, identity), and social (migration/refugee issues, convergence and cohesion of the European area) thematic areas of the EU or the broader European area (e.g., Council of Europe, OSCE).
