How does the “male gaze” capture the female body in Andromeda Bound on the Rocks by Nikolaos Kounelakis? How is the female experience recorded in the work of the first Greek painter to study at the School of Fine Arts, Sophia Laskaridou? From the symbolic violence and enslaved figures of Orientalism, to the idealized nude of the 20th century, women’s bodies traverse a long journey in Greek painting, coloured and reimagined through the artistic references and movements of each period. Viewing these works is made more fascinating through the gaze of the present that seeks new gendered representations in art and life.

The programme is an initiative of the National Gallery, in collaboration with the Diotima Centre, through the educational programme “Colours of Love and Colours of Violence”, proposing an interactive tour of artworks in the Museum and an experiential workshop immediately afterwards, in order to explore issues related to the representations of the female body in the field of art, the symbolic violence that acquires gendered content and the artistic reasons with which the female body has been invested over time.
