Description
The Master’s Degree Program (MDP) titled “NUTRITION, WELL-BEING & PUBLIC HEALTH” has been operating for the past six years in the Department of Food Science & Nutrition at the University of the Aegean (Government Gazette 2329/Vol.B/15.06.2020). The objective of the MDP is to provide education and up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of Nutrition in relation to the Promotion of Human Well-being and Health. The MDP lasts three academic semesters, with 8 courses in the first two semesters and the completion of a thesis (either a review or research study) in the third semester. It awards a Master’s Degree Diploma (MDD) in the thematic field of “Nutrition, Well-being & Public Health” and is delivered remotely using modern tele-education technology, with an optional intensive one-week course session held in Limnos at the beginning of June each year.
The MDP accepts graduates from Higher Education Institutions with various related specializations, such as health professionals (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, hygiene experts, etc.), nutritionists-dietitians, food scientists and technologists, chemists, biologists, agronomists, chemical engineers, environmental scientists, physical education specialists, public health officials, educators, food industry executives from Higher Education Institutions in Greece and equivalent recognized institutions abroad, as well as graduates of departments from Higher Technological Educational Institutions with a related field of study.
The objectives of the Program are, on one hand, the scientific training and specialization of future executives in public administration, food businesses, and consulting activities in the rapidly evolving field of nutrition; and on the other hand, the provision of advanced and specialized knowledge concerning the in-depth understanding, evaluation, and management of the nutritional value of food nutrients and their integration within the framework of a balanced diet and nutritional policy. Additionally, the program aims both to transfer specialized knowledge about internationally recognized nutrition standards related to reduced risk of chronic diseases, which simultaneously promote the overall quality of human life, and to promote these nutritional standards for achieving human well-being on multiple levels: social, cultural, economic, and environmental.
The program is taught by a broad teaching team of 35-40 instructors, consisting of faculty members from the department as well as faculty members from Higher Education Institutions in Greece or abroad, along with specialists with expert knowledge. The selection of instructors is based on their field of expertise and their scientific recognition in the field of nutrition, as well as the relevance of their expertise to the courses and lectures they participate in. Graduate students attend courses online with synchronous teaching, undertake individual or group assignments on cutting-edge topics in nutrition, and conduct graduate research that can be presented at scientific conferences and published in international journals.
