Description

The Center for Training and Lifelong Learning (KEDIVIM) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) welcomes you to the educational program entitled “The Hellenistic Koine language of the Bible and its cultural dimension“, lasting 62 teaching hours, which will be held from May to July 2026 and will be implemented using the Distance–Synchronous e-learning.

The Program focuses on understanding the Greek language of the Holy Scriptures, examining biblical texts linguistically, cultural, and theological perspectives, while also studying the broader Koine Hellenistic language, which is an important link in the unbroken continuity of the Greek language to the present day. Despite its recognized scientific importance, Koine Greek is not taught systematically, with the result that it is mistakenly considered to be covered by Classical Ancient Greek, and most aspects of it remain unknown or misunderstood. The aim of the program is to respond to the need for more comprehensive and specialized training for those involved in Greek biblical texts, teachers, and researchers, but also to contribute to a deeper study of the Koine language of the Hellenistic and Greco-Roman periods, highlighting the genetic and catalytic role it played, largely through the Greek Bible, in European culture. Contemporary educational material is used (corpora, interdisciplinary approaches, methods of computational linguistics) and modern technology and information tools are utilized in education.

The Scientific Director of the program is Kyriakoula Papademetriou, emeritus Professor of the School of Social Thelogy and Christian Culture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with specialization in New Testament Language, Exegesis and Hermeneutics.

The teaching staff includes Professors from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and from Democritus University of Thrace, specialized in Bible, linguistics and philology.
