The Laboratory of Humanistic Research and Sport Psychology of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki organises a conference entitled “Intercultural education: From Theory to Practice”, on Friday 15 November 2024, 11.00-14:00, at the KEDEA of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The conference is part of the INTERCOMP project, which aims to strengthen intercultural communication in education, taking into account the new social and educational conditions in Europe.

The partners of the project are members of the University of Thessaloniki, the University of Limerick (Ireland), the Free University of Bolzano (Italy), the Ministry of Education of Cyprus, the Sports Organization ICSSPE (Germany) and the 1st Experimental School of Thessaloniki. The project is funded by the European Union (Erasmus+ KA2).

More specifically, the INTERCOMP project aims to develop educational material to enhance the intercultural skills and competences of teachers serving in schools at all levels. However, these materials are addressed not only to current teachers but also to future educators and educational policy makers. An important aspect of the project is to provide support to teachers who come into contact with students who have refugee status or have been integrated into Greek schools, offering them pedagogical and psychological knowledge and empowering them to respond effectively to the particular demands of a multicultural environment.

The objectives of the project are the development of a Pan-European Network of Universities and educational institutions that will work together to establish courses in intercultural communication, the creation, implementation and testing of an effective educational programme that will enhance intercultural skills and competences, as well as the creation of a network of informed teachers, able to design and implement effective intercultural communication practices, based on the methods of socio-cultural communication.

In addition, INTERCOMP aims to enhance the professional profile of teachers, offering support and teaching methodologies aimed at reducing stress and improving their quality of life in their demanding working environment.

The expected outcomes of the project include, among others, the analysis of educational needs in the five participating countries, the development of educational materials and their dissemination to stakeholders such as teachers, universities, volunteers and refugee support organisations.

The conference is open to the public and is addressed, among others, to teachers, interested students, as well as other educational institutions and policy makers on these issues.

The INTERCOMP project was launched in February 2022 and is expected to complete all its actions in January 2025.
