Eleni Lyra’s solo exhibition Aspa, curated by Stratis Pantazis, is dedicated to the great artist Aspa Stasinopoulou, who passed away in 2017, who agreed to pose for Lyra’s camera, nude on a red cloth. From the photo shoot that took place at Stasinopoulou’s home in 2015, Lyra has exhibited only one photograph, which she first presented at her solo exhibition titled The Lambs of the Angels at the Italian Institute in 2015 and subsequently at various exhibitions in Greece and abroad. In the present show at the Batagianni Gallery, Lyra exhibits the entire body of work from her photo shoot with Stasinopoulou as the model, which she has digitally developed, adopting the characteristics of Baroque painting, as the works are dominated by a strong dramatic element and a pervasive need to convey a sense of sacredness that transcends the identity of the specific individual.
Lyra directs our gaze to the model’s body, with its visible signs of aging, to emphasize that “old age, along with childhood, are the two most sacred stages of the human journey, phases that demand a society’s utmost regard and that, respectively, define the levels of our civilization.” Furthermore, her photographs express humanity’s deep need to reconnect with its spirit and soul, to rediscover “humanity” through a truly humanistic approach that includes respect for those around them.
