The collections of the National Library of Greece were recently enriched with the archive of Timos Moraitinis (1874–1952), one of the most popular and creative figures in theater, journalism, and Greek literature during the first half of the 20th century.
In Timos Moraitinis’s archive, material related to theater occupies a central place; this includes handwritten and typewritten manuscripts of plays and revue works, as well as a limited amount of performance-related material (photographs, sheet music, programs). These documents shed light on both well-known and lesser-known aspects of his writing and highlight his collaboration with leading theater companies of the time, such as those of Marika Kotopouli, Kyveli, and Vasilis Argyropoulos.
The author’s archive also contains the remnants of his literary and journalistic work: early drafts, poems, prose pieces, chronicles, working notes, press clippings, and other documents. Part of his personal correspondence and some family heirlooms have also been preserved.
The archive of the author’s wife, Maria Dimitriou-Moraitinis, holds a prominent place in the collection and serves as a complement to his own. Numerous notes, letters, and draft letters, as well as translations and adaptations of his works, attest to her many years of dedicated effort to preserve and promote the author’s work. The culmination of her efforts was the seven-volume edition of Timos Moraitinis’s “Complete Works,” published in the 1960s. The volumes in this series are available at the NLG Public Catalogue.
The Moraitinis archives, which was acquired thanks to a donation from the author’s grandchildren, Phoebus, Timos, and Thanos Moraitinis, is a significant addition to the collections of the National Library of Greece, enhancing the ability to study and highlight important aspects of modern Greek intellectual output.
It is available in accordance with the current rules governing access to and use of the Special Collections of the National Library of Greece.
